ಶಂಕರ ಜಯಂತಿ / ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯ ಜಯಂತಿಯನ್ನು ವೈಶಾಖ ಮಾಸದ ಶುಕ್ಲ ಪಕ್ಷದ ಪಂಚಮಿ ದಿನ ಆಚರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇದು ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರ ಜನ್ಮ ದಿನ. ಇವರನ್ನು ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರ, ಶಂಕರ ಭಗವತ್ಪಾದಾಚಾರ್ಯ ಎಂದೂ ಕರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಸುಮಾರು ೮ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ಜೀವನ ನಡೆಸಿದರು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಇವರು ಕೇರಳದ ಕಾಲಡಿ ಎಂಬ ಊರಲ್ಲಿ ಜನಿಸಿದರು. ಚಿಕ್ಕ ವಯಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೇ ಸನ್ಯಾಸವನ್ನು ಆಲಂಗಿಸಿದರು. ಇವರ ಜೀವಿತದ ಅವಧಿ ಕೇವಲ ೩೨ ವರ್ಷವಾದರೂ ಇವರು ಮಾಡಿರುವ ಸಾಧನೆ ಅಪಾರ. ಇವರು ಮನುಷ್ಯ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರಲ್ಲ, ದೇವರ ಸ್ವರೂಪ ಎಂದೇ ಹೇಳಬಹುದು.

ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಪ್ರಚಾರಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ೪ ಮಠಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದರು. ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಗೆ ಶೃಂಗೇರಿ ಶಾರದ ಪೀಠ ಗೊತ್ತೇ ಇದೆ. ಇದಲ್ಲದೇ ಗುಜರಾತ್ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ದ್ವಾರಕದಲ್ಲಿ, ಒರಿಸ್ಸಾ ರಾಜ್ಯದ ಪೂರಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಮತ್ತು ಉತ್ತರಾಖಾಂಡ ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಠಗಳನ್ನು ಸ್ಥಾಪಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ.ಶಂಕರಾಚಾರ್ಯರು ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ರಚನೆಗಳನ್ನೂ ಮಾಡಿದ್ದರೆ. ಹಲವಾರು ದೇವರ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳನ್ನು ರಚಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಭಗವದ್ಗೀತೆ, ಉಪನಿಷದ್ ಮತ್ತು ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಸೂತ್ರಗಳಿಗೆ ಭಾಷ್ಯ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದಾರೆ. ಅದ್ವೈತ ವೇದಾಂತ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ಮಾಡುವವರು ಈ ಭಾಷ್ಯಗಳನ್ನೇ ಇಂದಿಗೂ ಅನುಸರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ.ಅದ್ವೈತ ಅನುಯಾಯಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಇವರೇ ಆದಿ ಗುರುಗಳು.

ಶಂಕರರಿಗಿಂತ ಮುಂಚೆಯೂ ಅದ್ವೈತ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತ ಇತ್ತು, ಆದರೆ ಇವರು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಒಂದು ನೆಲೆಗಟ್ಟು ಕೊಟ್ಟು, ದೇಶದ ಮೂಲೆ ಮೂಲೆಗೂ ಹೋಗಿ ಅದನ್ನು ಭೋಧಿಸಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಕಗೊಳಿಸಿದರು. ಅದ್ವೈತ ವೇದಾಂತದ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತವನ್ನು ದೃಢ ಪಡಿಸಿದರು.ಅದ್ವೈತವನ್ನು ಜನಪ್ರಿಯ ಮಾಡಿ, ಪ್ರಚಾರ ಮಾಡಿರುವುದರ ಮನ್ನಣೆಯೆಲ್ಲ ಆದಿ ಶಂಕರರಿಗೇ ಸೇರುತ್ತದೆ.

ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿಂದೂ ಧರ್ಮದ ಪ್ರಕಾರ ಮನುಷ್ಯನಿಗೆ ಪರಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಉಂಟಾಗಿ ಮೋಕ್ಷ ಹೊಂದುವುದೇ ಜೀವನದ ಉದ್ದೆಶವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಈ ಲಕ್ಷ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮುಟ್ಟಲು ಹಲವಾರು ಸಾಧನಗಳು(means) ಹಾಗು ತತ್ವ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತಗಳಿವೆ (school of thought). ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಅದ್ವೈತ ವೇದಾಂತ ಸಿದ್ಧಾಂತವೂ ಒಂದಾಗಿದೆ. ಈ ಪೂಜೆ, ಮಂತ್ರ, ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ, ಹೋಮ , ಹವನ ಕರ್ಮಗಳೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಸಹ ಈ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಪ್ರಾಪ್ತಿಯ ಮಾರ್ಗದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಾಧನಗಳಷ್ಟೆ. ಪರಮ ಸಾಧನೆಗೆ ಇವೆಲ್ಲವೂ ಮೆಟ್ಟಿಲುಗಳಾಗಬೇಕು. ಪೂಜೆ ಪುನಸ್ಕಾರಗಳನ್ನು ಮಾಡಬೇಕು ನಿಜ, ಆದರೆ ಇದಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಮಿಗಿಲಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಅನ್ವೇಷಣೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ನಾವು ಹೋಗಬೇಕು. ಬರಿ ಪೂಜೆ ಸ್ತೋತ್ರಗಳಲ್ಲೇ ಮುಕ್ತಾಯ ಆಗಬಾರದು.

ಅದ್ವೈತ ವೇದಾಂತವನ್ನು ನಂಬುವ ಮನೆಯಿಂದ ಬಂದಿರುವ ನನಗೆ ಈ ವಿಶೇಷ ದಿನವನ್ನು ಆಚರಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಬಹಳ ಸಂತೋಷವಾಗುತ್ತಿದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಅತ್ತೆ ಮಾವನವರು ವೆದಾಧ್ಯನ, ಉಪನಿಷದಗಳ ಅಧ್ಯಯನವನ್ನು ಸುಮಾರು ೧೫ ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿದ್ದರೆ. ಅವರಿಂದ ನಾನೂ ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿದ್ದೀನಿ, ಇನ್ನು ಅರಿತುಕೊಳ್ಳುವುದು ಬಹಳ ಇದೆ. ನಮ್ಮ ಅತ್ತೆಯವರು ಅದ್ವೈತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಸರಳ ವಿವರಣೆ ಮಾಡಿ ನನಗೆ email ಕಳಿಸಿದ್ದಾರೆ , ಅದನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಹಾಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದೀನಿ .

" I thought I can just give a very simple account of what is Advaita. We all know ourselves as individuals and there is the world of living and non living things, inanimate objects and the whole cosmos. We constantly interact with the world. Many times we sense that this interaction is unpredictable. It means, the way we do things and the way the results come, it is not a straight forward relationship. So we find that there are many unknown factors. So all these unknown factors, we group together and call it God. Since calling God as 'it', doesnt make it feel good, we think of God as a person who is all powerful, and praying to him or her will help me to deal with the world. So there are 3 entities, namely, I the individual, the rest of creation which we call world and the other unknown, God. Advaita establishes that all these 3 are not totally different entities, but is is one entity only which is called Brahman. An analogy is, how sugar being the basic substance, can appear in various shapes and sizes, but in essence is one only. Shankaracharya establishes that this is what all the upanishads, bhagavad gita, brahma sutras are telling in one voice. How this conclusion is arrived at, forms the subject matter of vedanta."
